Flox

Flox

I don’t know about you, but I am thoroughly sick of this cold weather and am ready to move on from winter for another 12 months.

I actually think it’s been colder in Sydney this year than the last few years, and somehow even wearing two pairs of my beloved Leona Edmiston black opaque tights doesn’t seem to be cutting it on some days.

I just discovered something called Flox (stupid name, smart idea) and they may be my ideal solution. Apparently, these babies look like ordinary black opaque tights, but are lined with superfine fleece for extra warmth and comfort.

They’re very reasonably priced, too - you can buy one pair online for $19.95 or two pairs for $34.95.

Leona Edmiston Pins

Leona Edmiston Pins

When it comes to tights, Leona Edmiston Pins are my all-time favourite.

For me, I must have at least four pairs on-hand during the cooler months - mainly because I love to layer two pairs on top of each other on really cold days, which also happens to give you that solid opaque effect.

The classic black luxury opaques are my staples, but I’m eyeing off the new-season collection of Leona Edmiston Pins, which has just arrived in time for autumn/winter.

My favourite of the new collection is the Bardot style, which features a classic houndstooth pattern. You have to be really careful with patterned tights, but the houndstooth design looks small enough to get away with it.

Unfortunately Leona Edmiston Pins aren’t available through the site’s online boutique, but you can buy them at Leona Edmiston boutiques and selected stockists - click on the link at the site to find one near you. Pins usually run out for around $20 a pair, though you’ll occasionally find them on sale.

Satin dress

Satin dress

It may seem the wrong time of the year to be buying a dress with a short hemline and short sleeves, but it can work for a night out if you dress it up right.

I’m quite taken with the green satin dress from Free Fusion at Target, pictured here, which is a steal at $39.99. I have a similar one in blue that cost me somewhere close to $100 some 18 months ago.

If you’re having a night out during the winter months you can still keep warm in a dress like this by teaming it with black opaque tights and a black knit over the top. My trick at the moment is to wear not one, but two pairs of Leona Edmiston Pins on my legs and trust me, you don’t feel the cold at all.

As for shoes, you need a nice black heel or mini-bootie. These Betts peep-toe booties for $119.95 would work.

And don’t forget. When it comes to wearing satin, keep the style loose. Tight satin is a disaster on anyone, unless you are Gisele Bundchen. It tends to show everything and anything.

Leona Edmiston Pins

Leona Edmiston Pins

I must be just about the clumsiest person on the planet because every time I wear tights they ladder on the first wear.

I’ve tried everything from the more expensive department store labels to the el cheapo supermarket brands and it doesn’t seem to matter. By the end of the day without fail I am walking around with a very attractive hole somewhere in my stockings.

As such I’ve been searching for the perfect pair of black opaque tights for years. (On a side note, can I just add one thing? Even though I am no “Sex and the City” fan, I do agree with Carrie Bradshaw about one thing: nude/flesh colours tights should NEVER BE SEEN! Unless you are trying to look like an office manager from 1986.)

Anyway, I was recently in Myer and decided to give the Leona Edmiston Pins range of tights a go. I went for Luxury Opaque in black which is 60 denier therefore far more opaque than the cheaper brands (although this pair only set me back around $20). So far I’ve worn them four times and hallelujah, no holes or ladders. I’m definitely going to stock up on more before the end of winter.

The range also includes Indulgent Sheers and Slimming Pants - check out your local Myer for more.

Simon DeWinter

Simon DeWinter

When I was growing up, my sister and I always had a steady supply of what we used to call “slipper socks” each winter.

They were those calf-length heavy knitted socks with a tougher sole, so you could schlep around the house with them (and sometimes even outside on brief excursions) without wearing through the bottoms.

I had completely forgotten about our old slipper socks until I saw the winter range from Simon DeWinter, complete with the full-length slipper sock, featured here (although Simon DeWinter’s name for it is Mixed Stripe Knit Mukluk knee hi sock).

The stripe pattern is really eye-catching and the socks look oh-so-warm (and goodness knows your feet are the first part of you to freeze during the colder months). They retail for $19.95.

The range also consists of similarly-priced knitted slippers and shorter booty-style mukluks, so there are plenty of options for you to stay warm.

The Simon DeWinter range is available at Myer stores around the country.
