The RDR-HXD870 DVD recorder is a newish addition to the Sony stable, having appeared late last year.
It’s an affordable model that also has some nice features including an in-built standard definition (SD) tuner and a 160GB hard drive.
Sony claims that hard drive will store up to 455 hours of content, although keep in mind that the figure will be significantly less if you have a large television screen.
There’s also support for a range of DVD formats including playback for DVD-RAM discs. The RDR-HXD870 will also upscale your DVDs to 1080p.
Another nice inclusion is Sony’s own HQ+ Recording mode, which the company claims gives your recordings sharper, clearer image quality.

Last week I was sitting in the RTA for what can only be described as an interminably long time, watching what is left of my youth slip away.
Unfortunately the chair was too uncomfortable to catch up on my beauty sleep so I was forced to resort to reading the signs and posters around me. That was how I discovered you can now get NRL-themed number plates for your car.
I thought that was kind of cool and I would actually maybe consider getting number plates for my team (Parramatta) if they weren’t such a royal embarrassment at the moment. I wonder if they will let me get a photo of Nathan “Hindy” Hindmarsh on my number plate. That would be only slightly less weird and stalkerish than the ex-boyfriend of mine who used to make me kiss his grubby old Parramatta jersey each time they won a game. Even if it was at the bottom of the dirty washing hamper.
You can get footy-themed number plates in other states, too - including for the AFL in Victoria and Western Australia. Check your local roads authority for more.

The Fujifilm FinePix S8000FD is a compact digital camera aimed at more advanced users.
If you are buying a digital camera for the first time and have limited digicam experience, the Fujifilm S8000FD may be a little overwhelming given its inclusion of manual and advanced automatic functions, including aperture and shutter priority and manual exposure modes.
However if you are a beginner you will appreciate the inclusion of 13 illustrated scene pre-sets, face detection and automatic red-eye removal.
The FinePix s8000FD is an 8-megapixel model that produces some very nice pictures. It’s also very solidly constructed so you can feel confident when you take it on holidays or into the great outdoors for the day.

Jeanswest clothes are nice and affordable even when not on sale, so suffice to say that sale time is a great opportunity to get some bargains.
The Jeanswest end of season sale started last week and if you’re looking to stock up on casual clothes for winter, now is the time.
Knitwear including hooded knits, cardigan and vests starts from $29.95 and you can also pick up two tops for $40 or three for $55.
Plus you can score two pairs of jeans for $99 - which is less than one pair of jeans at other stores.
For even more savings, play the Jeanswest multiple choice game online to instantly win a $10 voucher to spend in-store (don’t worry. The game is idiot-proof).

The BlueAnt range of Bluetooth speakerphone and hands-free headsets are both reliable and easy-to-use.
The BlueAnt Supertooth 3 is the most recent - and advanced - addition to the line up and makes it easy and safe to use your mobile phone while driving.
What makes the Supertooth 3 so exceptional is the inclusion of text-to-speech software. This means it announces the name of the caller when the phone rings and you can simply say “OK” to accept the call - there’s no need to press any buttons.
The voice prompts also help you to set up the device and upload your address book, then you use the included magnetic clip to attach it to your car’s sun visor.
Sound quality is crystal clear thanks to the advanced noise-cancelling software and it connects automatically to your mobile phone whenever you switch it on within range.

Some of the most popular compact digital cameras in recent years have come from Canon.
The IXUS 80 IS is a relatively new addition to Canon’s digital camera stable but should also prove to be popular with anyone looking for a reliable camera at a reasonable price.
It builds on the popular IXUS 70 model, upgrading to 8-megapixel resolution and tweaking some of the features including improved face detection technology and image stabilisation.
The Canon IXUS 80 IS is a great digital camera for anyone at the beginner to intermediate stage of camera use - it’s easy to use as there are no manual exposure controls (instead you’ll find a nice choice of preset scene modes). The menu is easy to navigate, as are all the buttons.
Performance-wise, the IXUS 80 IS has nice image quality for a camera in this price range, although it can be a little slow between shots. Finally, there is also an array of colours to choose from, including silver, brown, blue, pink and gold.
